LuvBug stories, scenarios, questions and lessons bolster pro-social skills. According to researchers Rasmsussen and colleagues, pro-social skills are central to childhood development and include our abilities to self-regulate and interact kindly with others. Children exhibiting pro-social skills are more empathetic and regularly considered to be more socially balanced.
LuvBug Learning focuses on supporting children’s emotion identification and management skills, and developing their abilities to use prosocial behaviors and to act with kindness. Dr. Susanne Denham and Dr. Nancy Eisenberg, two leading researchers in childhood development, confirm these skills to be foundational for children.
LuvBug Learning supports the development of these skills by using age-appropriate and research-based definitions of emotions and behaviors. For example, research by developmental scientists and psychologists, such as Dr. Paul Ekman and Dr. Kristin Lagattuta, contributes to the development of LuvBug’s content. LuvBug Learning provides children a vocabulary of emotions that they are prompted to use directly in communication with others.
Research by developmental scientists, including Dr. Kristin Lagattuta, Dr. Susanne Denham, Dr. Nancy Eisenberg, and Dr. Henry Wellman, shows us that children develop a comprehension of emotions and behaviors from age 0 to 12. LuvBug uses this research to adapt the gaming content to target age- appropriate learning. This means that children are learning about emotions and behaviors at the right age and as their skills develop, the game changes with them.
The design of LuvBug Learning is also informed by years of research on children’s learning from digital media. This research shows that children learn best from digital game play when it leads to conversations between parents and children. LuvBug Learning is designed to engage parents in the play. With parent involvement, LuvBug Learning supports development that continues to benefit children, even after they have turned off their devices.
LuvBug Learning has used the latest research to develop an evidence-based, compelling, learning platform that fosters a Growth Mindset in children. Children are inspired by their progress along the Learning Path and are encouraged by LuvBug characters to advance through challenges and questions. Through repetition and interactive game-play, children are continuously challenged with learning words and concepts well outside their comfort zone. LuvBug models growth, learning from mistakes, and embedding perseverance throughout.
Emotional and Character Development skills:
- Are critical for children's success in school (both behaviorally and academically)
- Support children’s growth into competent and happy adults
- Promote self-awareness and more fulfilling relationships
Child development experts such as, Dr. Susanne Dehnham and Dr. Cybele Raver, have done extensive developmental research on children. Emotional development describes the way children develop and apply these skills to manage emotions, achieve life goals, demonstrate empathy, form relationships and make thoughtful decisions. In fact, the positive benefits of emotional development last for years and lead to overall better well-being and academic success.
